As we get older and wiser, unfortunately so does the radiance and smoothness of our skin. Since we can’t slow down the clock, we need to understand what causes the change by understanding what those changes are and how to treat them. So let’s break it down. First on identifying common skin issues and then how to prevent and treat.

1. Hyperpigmentation: there are many forms of hyperpigmentation so identifying which one you suffer from can help a lot in determining treatment.

• Sunspots are the most common and develop over time as we become more exposed to the sun.
• Melasma is often caused by pregnancy due to the changes in hormones and often shows up in the face.
• Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is usually caused by an injury or breakouts which we know as acne (which we’ll talk about next).

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by the overproduction of melanin, which is what gives skin it’s color, due to the many reasons listed above. The best solution is using a daily SPF to help block those sun rays, we recommend a minimum of 30 SPF.

2. Acne: Unfortunately for us adults, acne doesn’t stop in high school. The cause is usually due to pores being blocked and not cleaned properly or regularly. Oil, dirt, and bacteria can fill pores which results in pimples that can range in count and size. Often we struggle with adult acne the most because of how visual they can be. They can physically hurt too.
The key to keeping acne at bay or getting rid of it altogether is being aware if your skin is prone to it and being diligent on your skincare routine.

• Use a daily cleanser both morning and night to ensure you’re removing all makeup, dirt, and oil, always cleanse the clear area first, leaving the infected area till last.
• Limit touching your face as bacteria from your hands can easily transfer.
• Change your pillowcase regularly so as not to spread infection.
• Do not squeeze – this can also spread the infection and leave scars, good skin is a clean skin so thorough cleansing with our beU Manuka Cream Cleanser will cleanse and moisturize leaving your skin breathable while restoring its suppleness and softness.
• Use water-based makeup to avoid pore-clogging. Avoid oil-based makeup altogether.
• Limit stress levels, easier said than done we know, but often stress shows up in your skin. So be mindful in stressful times to take some self-care measures to help reduce it where you can.
• Medical treatment can also be sought after if you’re not seeing results, talk to your doctor.

3. Blemishes: usually show up on the skin as spots, discoloration or marks and range in various types:

• Acne through pimples, whiteheads or blackheads are probably the most common type.
• Age spots also known as liver spots caused due to long sun exposure which is why you see it commonly in older women. These are also known as sunspots or caused due to hyperpigmentation (see how they are all connected).
• Papules can be large and are skin lesions which can look like pimples are often the result of medical conditions like chickenpox or eczema.
• Nodules are another form that can be large and hard to the touch. They can show up as warts as tags.
